St. Petersburg Metro. Line 1

Owner/Client:

Petersburgskij Metropoliten / Impregilo S.p.A. - NCC

Cost of works:

USD $ 126 million

Period of Activity:

1996 - 2004

The Metro Line 1 (Red Line) runs from NE to SW districts, passing through the centre of the city of St. Petersburg and under the Neva River, for an overall length of 32.4km and includes 19 stations. Rail levels for twin-tube, single-track running tunnels (790.54m and 771.17m-long respectively, with internal diameter of 6.4m) and stations are some 60-70m below ground level. The deep vertical alignment of Line 1 was conceived for avoiding potential settlement of the surface due to the soft weak grounds. A hydroshield TBM was used along the most difficult ground stretch.

— Project Description:

The section between Lesnaya and Pl. Muzhestvava stations crosses the middle of a buried paleo-channel, filled with water satured bearing soft soils with very poor geotechnical properties, in an urban environment. The excavation of this stretch was driven with a hydroshield TBM to deliver the necessary pressure for face stability against groundwater pressure up to 6 bars. The TBM parts were transported at tunnel level through a 70m-deep shaft and then mounted in an assembly chamber, previously excavated by conventional method (SEM) starting from Lesnaya. After excavation of the first tunnel, the machine was reversed inside a returning chamber (this time excavated from Pl. Muzhestva) for the excavation of the second tunnel.
