The Empresa Pública Metropolitana de Agua Potable y Saneamiento-Quito (EPMAPS-Q) is developing studies for the second phase of the Rios Orientales project (PRO), which will meet the demand of drinking water in the medium and long term (up to 2040) of the Quito metropolitan district and its surrounding suburbs.

— Project Description:

The second phase of the Rios Orientales Project includes the realization of different water collection works. The water collected by Pucalpa, Semiond, Quijos Sur-Norte, Cristal, Tablón, Blanco Grande Rivers will be conducted by 3 small tunnels to the existing reservoir located in the Papallacta site (capacity of 38,000m 3 ). The 3 small tunnels, whose total length is over 17km, will be excavated by conventional method (D&B) in two geological contexts: basement rocks of the “Cordillera Real” formation and complex volcanic rocks (intermediate to acid types).
