Hydrogeological study - Brenner Railway Base Tunnel

Owner/Client:

Galleria di Base del Brennero - Brenner Basistunnel BBT SE

Cost of works:

€ 5,125 million

Period of Activity:

2011 - 2013

The Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) is the main element of the new Brenner railway from Munich to Verona. At 64km, it is the longest underground railway connection in the world, a pioneering work of engineering and it will markedly improve passenger travel and freight transport through the heart of Europe.

— Project Description:

The BBT consists of two tubes, each 8.1m wide, separated by 70m. These tubes each contain a single track, with one-way train traffic through the tubes. The two tubes are linked every 333m by connecting side tunnels to be used in emergencies as escape routes. This configuration conforms to the highest security standards for tunnels. A feature of the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) is the exploratory tunnel running from one end to the other. This tunnel lies between the two main tunnels and about 12m below them and with a diameter of 5m is noticeably smaller than the main tubes. The excavations currently underway on the exploratory tunnel should provide information on the rock mass and thereby reduce construction costs and times to a minimum. The exploratory tunnel will be essential for drainage when the BBT becomes operational. The two-tube tunnel system between Innsbruck and Fortezza is 55km-long.

— Description of Services:

Engineering during final design and in particular for:

  • Geological and hydrogeological study collection of hot waters in Brennero Thermae (BZ).
  • Monitoring springs.
  • Updating hydrological knowledge on the corridor project.
  • Hydrogeological study of the BBT (54 km), aimed at the final design - Research Group Consorzio Ferrara Ricerche.
  • Geological, geomorphological, geotechnical and hydrogeological detail study - Fortezza – (BZ). Participation at the expert group called GEOTEAM:
  • Hydrogeological, geological and geotechnical study between Trento North and Rovereto South.
