Bangalore, in the South West of India, is the country’s fastest-growing metropolitan area. The Bangalore Metro crosses the bustling commercial and residential areas of the city. The first phase of Bangalore Metro, consisting of two corridors of new double line and running East-West and North-South, covers a total of 42.30km. The East-West corridor is 18.10km-long, stretching from Baiyappanahalli and terminating at Mysore Road terminal, while the North-South corridor is 24.20km-long and runs from Nagadandra to Puttenahalli. Out of the 42.3km, 8.82km are underground connecting Majestic Station with Chickpete and City Market stations.


— Project Description:

The assignment refers to a 3.6km-long portion of the underground section of the North-South corridor. The overall alignment includes:

  • 2,515m-long, twin-bored tunnel with a diameter of 5.6m, excavated by means of 3 EPB-TBMs;
  • Two dives located at both North and South sides, excavated by Cut&Cover for a total length of 600m;
  • Two underground stations: City Market and Chickpete stations, in Cut&Cover with bottom/up structures (225 m-long each) which are excavated below the groundwater table;
  • Two TBM shafts in proximity of the Majestic station (520m-long Cut&Cover stretch);
  • One bypass near Majestic Station;
  • Three safety cross passages.

The tunnel underpasses densely urbanized areas, with shallow cover in some locations, and passing through water bearing soft soils ground including silty sand and clayey silt underlain by granitic bedrock.

— Description of Services:

Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, Construction Reference Drawings, Working Drawings, and Construction Assistance. The design activities include: alignment design, geological and geotechnical studies, architectural and functional design of the stations, structural design of all the civil works (stations, ramps, shafts), conventional tunnel works, TBM tunnels, monitoring design, interface and E&M design coordination, design of the traffic diversion and utilities relocation, building risk assessment.
