India is one of the world’s nations that is part of the BRIC which is facing an impressive economic growth annually. In this context, the Indian government is planning every year the construction of new regional infrastructures. One of the most important projects is the new single-track railway line between Rishikesh and Karanprayag with a length of approximately 125km.
The new line is located in Uttarakhand region, in the Gange valley, which is visited every year by a mass peregrination of Hindi populations. The new railway should facilitate the transfer of tourists to the sacred places of Badrinath and Kedarnath in particular where the sources of the sacred river are located. The new work represent technical difficulties, especially related to the activity of the slopes and their instability, due to the cycles of rain/dry typical of the tropical area. The solution, in order to secure the railway long-term, was the massive use of underground works.
The project includes the development of the new alignment of the 125km-long Broad Gauge New Rail link between Rishikesh and Karanprayag, in the State of Uttarakhand (India). The project, which is considered a strong contribution from the Government to the community, will reduce the arduous 12-15 hours road journey between the holy city of Rishikesh and Karanprayag to a few hours and will include the construction of 12 stations, 17 tunnels including 15.10km of the longest tunnel and 16 major bridges including a bridge of 65m-high.
