The “Santa Vittoria d’Alba” Hydropower Plant is located on the Tanaro River in North-West Italy, province of Cuneo, municipality of Santa Vittoria d'Alba, where a weir constructed in the 1970s across the river seasonally diverts a small part of the flow for local agricultural use.

— Project Description:

The weir is itself environmental-friendly, being composed of cemented boulders in a river stretch where floods move and deposit sand, gravel, cobbles and even larger blocks. Since the initial idea of producing energy through capturing the river flow to take advantage of the existing 5-6m head between upstream and downstream of the weir, the challenge was to design an underwater powerhouse, fully integrating with the natural surroundings and landscape by keeping structures submerged and, therefore, invisible above surface level. This was to be a distinguishing peculiarity of the plant, an example for total respect of the environment. The project layout is simple and neat. The intake, powerhouse and discharge channel are in the middle of the river, fully incorporated within the body of the existing weir. An adit which starts from a shaft near the left bank of the river which runs under the river bed along the upstream face of the existing weir gives access to the underwater powerhouse. Two fish ladders are located on the left and right side of the river, incorporated within the weir body. Four flap gates to the right of the powerhouse control river floods and another gate is used for flushing. The plant is equipped with two bulb type Kaplan turbines, designed for a nominal head of 5.87m, maximum discharge of 80m3/s. With an annual average flow of 30.1 m3/s, the average production is expected to be of around 13.5 GWh/yr.
