The Government of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) in India recently emphasized the need for rapid development of national roads, particularly up-grading of National / State highways, major district roads and other allied road networks. This included the construction of new roads/tunnels for better connectivity to remote areas, which was considered vital to the interests and requirements of travel and tourism, trade and commerce, security and defense and to foster national integration. The tunnel at Razdhan pass is part of this Governmental projects and will connect Gurez with Bandipore for a length of around 18km; constructing this tunnel would give India strategic benefits over Pakistan in the area which is often used as an infiltration route by militants, and will furthermore boost the tourism and the year-round connectivity to the habitants.

— Project Description:

The 18km-long tunnel, with over 1000m of maximum cover, will reduce the isolation of the populations living in the Northern side of the Razdhan Pass, that is closed in winter time. The project layout foresees a single-bore tunnel, with two-lanes and double-way; a large ventilation cavern is located in the middle of tunnel. An escape/safety tunnel is provided parallel to the main one and connected to it by cross-passages.
