It is the largest and most articulate public work of urban transformation started in the Region of Sicily that, once completed, will transform the existing railway line into a subway line. The project consists of doubling 30km of railway line, out of which about 7.5km are in tunnels crossing the entire City of Palermo longitudinally and encountering both historical and recent, highly-populated, residential areas.

— Project Description:

The railway section linking Palermo Centrale/Brancaccio Station to Carini Station is 30km-long and includes the construction or upgrade of 23 stations, bridges, tunnels, overbridges, construction of trackworks, cuttings, embankments, drainage systems, deflection wall and all MEP and System equipment. The approx.7.5km-long tunnel running in the historic center of Palermo and in the Capaci area is mainly realized by C&C method while 1.2km are realized by mechanized excavation. Among the civil works an approximately 50m-long viaduct over Oreto River is foreseen and a series of overpasses and underpasses along the line will also be built to replace numerous existing railway crossing. The technological improvements includes a new permanent way with anti-vibration system in the tunnel; OHW; LV-HV electric system; signalling; supervision and communication systems, MEP equipment for tunnel and underground stations. All works are executed during railway operation.
