The Joint Venture of MMC-GAMUDA awarded a 50-years contract for the Design, Construction and Management of the new rail link between Ipoh and Padang Besar, in the Northern part of Malaysia. For this new connection two hills (“bukit” in Malaysian language) called Berapit and Larut required to be crossed by 2 tunnels.

— Project Description:

Berapit Tunnel 2900m-long twin-tube, single-track tunnel with an overburden ranging between 100 and 230m, and an internal diameter of 7m. The tunnel has been excavated with the conventional method. Larut Tunnel 390m-long, single-tube, double-track tunnel, with an overburden ranging between 40 and 80m, and internal diameter of 12.10 m. Both tunnels will be mainly excavated full face (95m 2 and 50m 2 respectively) using explosives.
