Transitgas AG propose development of and the operation and maintenance a 293km-long pipeline containing natural gas from the Netherlands and Norway, which crosses the Alps through Switzerland from France and Germany to Italy.

— Project Description:

As a part of the overall project, it was proposed to develop a tunnel through the excavation mechanized technique by shield TBM. The tunnel is 5.2km-long with a slope of 4.87%, a diameter of 4.6m, a maximum overburden of 550m and a finished internal diameter of 3.8m. The tunnel host a 1200mm - diameter tube to be used as a pipeline for methane. The tunnel lining is formed by precast, reinforced concrete segments with metal fibers. The Tunnel traversed very deformed formations, typical of the area, such as Schlierenflysch, Sörenberg Melange, and Globigerinenmergel, which was predicted to contain gas. The rock mass to be excavated was characterized by sedimentary lithotypes with medium-low characteristics, tending to squeeze at high coverages.
