The city of Lima has about 11 million inhabitants and an almost total lack of public transport infrastructure. Private transport is one of the main causes of urban mobility problems. For this reason the Municipality of Lima is completely renewing the public transport network. The project will ensure the city with 5 major transportation lines (1 Bus Rapid Transit Line - BRT, 1 metro line on viaduct, and 3 underground metro lines). The construction of Line 2 and part of line 4 is the major component of the public transport network.

— Project Description:

The project consists of 35km of completely automatic underground metro line (GoA4), parts of two different lines which operate respectively towards east-west (L2, between Ate and the Port of Callao) and towards north-south (L4, stretch between the airport and the connection with the L2). The tunnels will be excavated in two stages, using in each stage up to 4 TBMs simultaneously, aiming to shorten constructions time of the first stage. Totally 35 underground stations will be realized (in mined cavern and cut/cover), exchange stations of the existing Line 1 (which runs on a viaduct) with the central node of the existing BRT (Central Station), and predisposition of the connection with future Line 3. Two depots for the train’s repairs are foreseen: Santa Anita Depot and Canta Callao Depot. The project includes also 2 control centers (one for each operating line) and a depot, supply of rolling stocks, and post-construction operation of the line for 30 years. In late March 2014 the Client awarded the concession contract to the Consorcio Nuevo Metro de Lima. The Project was awarded for the Best Design and Best Project Financing of the year 2013 by the 11th Latin American Leadership Forum on Infrastructure.
