The Chontal hydroelectric plant, with an installed capacity of 194MW, is located in the middle basin of the Guayllabamba River, in the Provinces of Pichincha and Imbabura. The Project is part of a wider program of the Government of Ecuador for the hydroelectric development in the Guayllabamba basin, which foresees the future construction of 8 similar projects.

— Project Description:

The Chontal power plant has a reservoir capacity of 22Mm 3 created by a 142m-high concrete gravity dam (RCC). The main features of the project are: power intakes for a discharge capability of 180m 3 /s, a 900m- long headrace tunnel with an internal diameter of 7m, a 55m-high surge shaft with a diameter of 14m, a 220 m-long horseshoe penstock, an open air power plant for 2 Francis turbines, and a 115m-long tailrace channel. The Power Plant will have an annual production of about 1000GWh.
