SMART Tunnel - Kuala Lumpur

Owner/Client:

JV MMC - GAMUDA

Cost of works:

USD $ 514 million

Period of Activity:

2004 - 2006

The "Stormwater Management And Road Tunnel" or "SMART Tunnel", is a storm drainage and road structure in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and a major national project in the country. The 9.7km-long tunnel is the longest stormwater tunnel in South East Asia and the second longest in Asia. The main objective of this tunnel is to solve the problem of flash floods in Kuala Lumpur and also to reduce traffic jams along Jalan Sungai Besi and Loke Yew flyover at Pudu during rush hour. There are two components of this tunnel, the stormwater tunnel and motorway tunnel. It is the longest multi-purpose tunnel in the world.

— Project Description:

This 9.7km-long tunnel with a diameter of 13.2m is unique. It combines a floodwater storage and diversion tunnel with a highway tunnel which will carry traffic on two lanes in each direction, on two separate decks over 2.8km. During moderate storms, floodwater will be contained within the invert of the tunnel in a channel without interrupting traffic flow. However, in cases of severe storms the traffic can be evacuated and floodwater allowed to fill the tunnel. The tunnel has a combined storage capacity of 3 million m 3 . The works also include storage ponds and floodgates. The tunnel was constructed using two identical slurry/mixshield tunnel boring machines manufactured by Herrenknecht. The tunnel is located within an urban environment close to existing infrastructure and there is limited cover above the tunnel. The ground conditions are highly variable comprising karstic limestone covered by alluvium. Cavities not filled with soil pose a tremendous risk to the project consequently the separation plant has 2000m 3 of bentonite available to compensate for any loss to the formation. With such a risk the Client considered it essential that there should be continuous monitoring using geotechnical and structural instrumentation and also instrumentation installed on the tunnel boring machines to monitor their performance, in particular, face pressures and slurry volumes.

— Description of Services:

Geodata SpA was commissioned to supply their GDMS system which provided a data management system capable of handling the large quantities of real-time data generated during construction. The system provided also gives, via predefined threshold values, early warning of any potential problem recorded by the instrumentation via text messaging, email and telephone.
