Turin Automatic Metro. Line 1

Owner/Client:

GTT Gruppo Torinese Trasporti S.p.A. – INFRA.TO S.r.L.

Cost of works:

€ 628 million

Period of Activity:

1999 - 2011

The construction of Line 1 of the Turin Metro fulfilled the objective of providing a modern, collective transport network to the city. The choice of a Driverless Technology System (VAL System) as reference technology – the first in Italy – gave a high added value to the metro in terms of functional and transportation reliability, economy, and safety of the work. In addition to the problems associated with the urban context, the Line 1 project had to deal (ultimately successfully) with the unalterable program constraints requiring completion of the work on time for the Winter Olympic Games of 2006 (first section); and the 2011 Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Unification of Italy (second section).

— Project Description:

Line 1 runs entirely underground with a 15.2km-long, single-tube, twin-track running tunnel (diameter of 6.8m). The first section, in operation since February 2006, links Collegno to Porta Nuova, with a total length of 9.6km, and it was excavated using 3 EBP-TBMs. Fifteen underground stations were realized using cut- and-cover method. Cross passages and ventilation shafts were excavated through conventional methods. The second section, in operation since February 2011, develops southward under Via Nizza, from Porta Nuova railway station to Lingotto, with a total length of 3.7km and 6 underground stations. In 2008 the final design for the extension of the line to Piazza Bengasi and Moncalieri was approved for 1.9km of additional running tunnels and 2 more stations. A fully automatic depot and control center is provided in Collegno. The entire line was located in water bearing alluvial deposits, including sandy gravel to silty sands, with extensive use of ground treatment for both increasing ground strength and reducing permeability.
