The work was included in the Menaggio bypass project, consisting of the new SS 340 “Regina” alignment between Nobiallo and Pastura. The Project was planned to ease the intensity of traffic flow caused by the inefficiency of the roads that run across the town. Together with Menaggio tunnel, the construction of the junction works and access to the existing main roads consisting of jump connections (Southern entrance) and viaducts with corresponding acceleration and deceleration ramps (Northern entrance) were also designed. Menaggio tunnel has a two-lanes layout (90m 2 cross-section) with 10 three-lane sections at intervals (130m 2 cross section) for emergency and de-acceleration purposes.
