ERL, now integrated into the Thompson East Coast Line, is a fully underground Mass Rapid Transport line running from Marina Bay along the East Coast of the island, eventually to Changi Airport and integrating the rail network in stages by 2023. The new line is part of the Land Transport Authority of Singapore Masterplan to double the length of the network to 360km.
The key feature of this package is a one-of-its-kind 4-in-1 depot for three MRT lines stacked on three different levels (underground, at grade and elevated) and integrated with a bus depot for 550 busses, all tightly arranged in order to minimize the land-take over an area of less than 30ha. The contract also comprises C+C Main Line tunnels for approximately 2km of main line ERL and 2.4km of extension of the Downtown Line (DTL) from the overrun tunnel of Expo Station, one three-level basement interchange station between the two lines and one two-level station, Reception Tracks tunnel (also C+C) connecting to the Rail Depot and all the facilities associated with train and bus stabling and maintenance. From geotechnical point of view the main challenges are associated with the support of excavation in very soft clays as deep as 29m for the C+C tunnels and the very wide excavation for the rail depot ranging between 150m and 360m with no intermediate support from ground level down to 15m depth.
GEODATA contributed to the team of Parsons Brincherhoff providing the design for bored tunnels and cross passages, TBM specifications, analysis of settlement induced by underground works, anticipated damage to nearby buildings and with the design of earth retaining structures for the depot, station box and cut-and- cover tunnels.
