The Road Connection Aburrá Oriente is a mega-project in Colombia which connect the Metropolitan Area of Medellin with the José Maria Cordoba (JMC) International Airport at Rionegro; two regions of great importance, which have a large-scale industrial, tourist, environmental and mobility dynamic.
The project consists of a 23 km stretch of two-way traffic with dual carriageway expressway, of which 1,9 km in viaduct and 9 km in tunnels. The Santa Elena Tunnel (8,2 km length) inaugurated on August 15, 2019 and is the longest operating road tunnel in Latin America
In 2013, following strong local protests, the Colombia’s National Authority for Environment Protection (ANLA) suspended the license issued to the concessionaire in 2011 due to the risk of groundwater impact on Santa Elena's region during tunnel excavation. This generated the need to update the environmental impact study. Geodata was contracted by the concessionaire to define the reference hydrogeological model for design to identify the mitigation and compensation solutions.
