Road Connection Aburrá Oriente-Túnel de Oriente, Colombia

Owner/Client:

Concesión Túnel Aburrá Oriente S.A.

Cost of works:

317 million US$

Period of Activity:

2012 - 2013

The Road Connection Aburrá Oriente is a mega-project in Colombia which connect the Metropolitan Area of Medellin with the José Maria Cordoba (JMC) International Airport at Rionegro; two regions of great importance, which have a large-scale industrial, tourist, environmental and mobility dynamic.

— Project Description:

The project consists of a 23 km stretch of two-way traffic with dual carriageway expressway, of which 1,9 km in viaduct and 9 km in tunnels. The Santa Elena Tunnel (8,2 km length) inaugurated on August 15, 2019 and is the longest operating road tunnel in Latin America

— Description of Services:

In 2013, following strong local protests, the Colombia’s National Authority for Environment Protection (ANLA) suspended the license issued to the concessionaire in 2011 due to the risk of groundwater impact on Santa Elena's region during tunnel excavation. This generated the need to update the environmental impact study. Geodata was contracted by the concessionaire to define the reference hydrogeological model for design to identify the mitigation and compensation solutions. The main activities carried out by Geodata were the following:

  • Site geotechnical investigations, including 358 m of deep boreholes, 7300 m of electrical tomography, 85 audio-magnetotellurics AMT surveys along all the tunnel alignment, Lugeon tests, constant flow and step pumping tests, piezometers equipment.
  • Inventory of groundwater 410 points (springs, wells, piezometers, surface waters)
  • Geological and geophysical reference model
  • Hydrogeological reference model
  • Drawdown Hazard Index (DHI Method) calculations to forecast springs and river impacts
  • Numerical simulations (Feeflow - 2D) to forecast tunnel GW inflow and springs and river impacts
  • Public presentations to the stakeholders of the project’s technical progress
