Rome Metro. Extension of Line B

Owner/Client:

Municipality of Rome

Cost of works:

€ 406 million

Period of Activity:

2004 - 2008

The transportation planning of a city like Rome presents a high level of complexity and requires the choice of strict planning tools. According to the “Mobility System”, which is the reference planning document drawn up and approved by the city administration of Rome, the metro network is a necessary means of transport, capable of connecting, in a rather short time, the highly populated areas of the suburbs to the city center. The extension of Line B coherently fits in the mobility scenario, enabling the old line to settle close to the existing ring-road highway (Grande Raccordo Anulare, GRA), including a section of the challenging running tunnel constructed with a lot of constraints under the same ring-road.

— Project Description:

The extension of Line B of Rome metro starts from the existing Rebibbia station and ends at the new Casal Monastero station. The overall length of the extension of Line B is 3.6km, including 3km for the extension and 0.62km for the connection to the terminal depot, entirely excavated by C&C in loose volcanic soils, in a densely urbanized environment. The project also includes three stations and the new terminal depot. Extensive use of ground treatment and groundwater control systems are foreseen. The GRA-crossing section was designed to be an important node of exchange, consisting of a multi-storey parking lot with 5 floors, a ground parking lot for public-transport vehicles, and associated new services.
