West Vaughan Sewer System (WVSS)

Owner/Client:

The Regional Municipality of York

Cost of works:

USD 213,393,478

Period of Activity:

2015 - 2023

The project develops in the York Region which is in the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Southern Ontario and it is the only GTA Region without direct access to Lake Ontario. The proposed sewer alignment is subdivided into four segments (Northern, Western, Central and Southern) based on the proposed construction method used for the individual sections. The linear assets associated with this project and the pumping station structure shall have a design life of 100 years.

— Project Description:

This project involves a trunk sewer from the Kleinburg Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP) to the Humber Sewage Pumping Station (HSPS) and to expand the existing HSPS from a capacity of 1,700 l/s to 2,400 l/s. The WVSS project includes a 14km-long series of sewer tunnels with associated pumping station overhaul and access shafts. The tunnels, with approximate 3m-inner diameter, will be excavated in glacial soil and soft rock using two earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machines, also incorporating a segmental concrete lining. The project design will also take into consideration the protection of existing infrastructure and natural features.
