Electrification and High-speed upgrade of Tehran–Mashhad Railway Project

The Tehran-Mashhad line is one of the prioritized railway lines undergoing electrification. With a length of 926 kilometers, the Tehran-Mashhad line is one the most frequented railway lines of Iran and one of the few double-track lines of the country. The highest possible speed on this route is 160 Km/h which is set to increase to 200 km/h after the electrification project is completed.

— Project Description:

The 926km-long Tehran-Mashhad railway line passes through main Iranian cities and it is the major railway axis to access Northern and North-Eastern areas of the country. Currently, approximately 56% of Iran rail passengers travel through this axis. It is expected that the passenger carrying capacity of this system will be 35 million persons per year and its load carrying capacity will be 10 million tons per year. Additionally, considering the double-track, triple-track and quad-track sections as well as the lines of stations, depots and parking, it will be necessary the design and construction of 2,400km of overhead catenary system (OCS).
The alignment runs on various geographical areas and crosses plain zones, hills, and mountains.
The project envisages many technical challenges which involve the application of different technical disciplines. Among these, the upgrade of 49 stations and more than 6000 bridges
