GDMS is an integrated System for Design and Construction Management

GDMS was developed by GEODATA on the basis of more than 25 years experience in tunnelling projects.

GDMS is based on the modern Geographical Information System and web technologies.

GDMS was developed in 1999, to be used in parallel in Porto and Turin Metros.

It underwent continuous software improvements and it was supplied in various projects, such the SMART Project (KL, Malaysia), the Santiago Metro (Chile), and the drainage tunnels for Maldonado River to improve flood control and environmental sanitation of the City of Buenos Aires (Argentine).

Databases linked via a geographic interface are the central element of GDMS.

The integrity of data is guaranteed and the information regarding investigations and surveys, design data and documentation, construction records, monitoring data, TBM parameters and back-analysis is managed in layers on the key reference map, both in a spatial and temporal setting.

The organised flow of information is collected, validated, stored, organised. It is then made available in real-time in a dynamic and user-friendly archive.

Users can access GDMS through a simple Internet browser and can customise their own profile according to their access rights.

Users can make query, retrieve and compare data, customise the visualisations and do their own interpretations.

An added value is given by its modular structure that makes GDMS adaptable to the diverse needs of different customers and partners and to the particular requirements of any specific project.

Below is a list of the available modules that can be combined in various ways to form a product with high degree of customization:

GDMS provides a Web-GIS integrated platform able to access to all project information and documents stored in the Data Archive.
  • The system has a distributed structure. Application servers are physically installed on different hardware units.
  • The core system is the Data Archive, that stores spatial data, not-spatial data and file based data (hypertext, photos, schemas, metadata and documents). The Data Archive is organized into different physical databases, to store the different type of information.
  • Backup system and redundant procedures keep all the data safe
The figure shows how information is managed, and some detail about processes for collecting and processing data.
In brief there are four data flows:
1. Transmission: it is a simple exchange of row data.
2. Elaboration:  it is an exchange between entities that adds value creating a more refined information.
3. Validation: the technical management of the project checks information and validate it.
4. Feedback: information that have been elaborated and verified are sent as feedback to data producers, expert on field, and others involved users, in order to inform them, and to have them act as defined by decisional process.

GDMS uses several tools as interface between user and databases:

  • The graphical interface based on GIS (Geographic Information Systems) displays map on user’s computer and extract spatial data.
  • The interface of non-spatial data related to the WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) projects on user’s computer the identical (and updated) situation existing in non-spatial database, allowing user access to the documents from the moment of their storage.
  • To further facilitate access to information, it is also envisaged the possibility of a free search (FREE) directly on the GDMS database through a simple interface similar to search engines available on the Internet (Google, Virgilio, Yahoo).
GDMS allows switching from one type of interface to another at any time.
