GDMS is an integrated System for Design and Construction Management
GDMS was developed by
GEODATA on the basis of more than 25 years experience in tunnelling projects.
GDMS is based on the modern Geographical Information System and web technologies.
GDMS was developed in 1999, to be used in parallel in Porto and Turin Metros.
It underwent continuous software improvements and it was supplied in various projects, such the SMART Project (KL, Malaysia), the Santiago Metro (Chile), and the drainage tunnels for Maldonado River to improve flood control and environmental sanitation of the City of Buenos Aires (Argentine).
Databases linked via a geographic interface are the central element of GDMS.
The integrity of data is guaranteed and the information regarding investigations and surveys, design data and documentation, construction records, monitoring data, TBM parameters and back-analysis is managed in layers on the key reference map, both in a spatial and temporal setting.
The organised flow of information is collected, validated, stored, organised. It is then made available in real-time in a dynamic and user-friendly archive.
Users can access GDMS through a simple Internet browser and can customise their own profile according to their access rights.
Users can make query, retrieve and compare data, customise the visualisations and do their own interpretations.
An added value is given by its modular structure that makes GDMS adaptable to the diverse needs of different customers and partners and to the particular requirements of any specific project.
Below is a list of the available modules that can be combined in various ways to form a product with high degree of customization:
Basic module (mandatory, with Java) It contains home page for exclusive and secured access, and default pages with general content for all modules.

This module allows storage, updating and download of documents, both for design and construction phase, according to the user’s profile. Based on the principle that all data shall be put in only once, this module allows document’s geographic link on the reference map to their origin or to the element the documents are referred to. It can manage all kind of documents, like project documents, mails, pictures, periodic reports, daily work reports.

The BCS module manages the historic records of the condition surveys of all the buildings located in the area potentially affected by tunnelling. Surveyors will input data and photographical documentation directly in the system database. Data can be queried and thematic maps on structural and foundation types or on vulnerability categories can be interactively created.

The MONITORING module manages dynamically - both in time and in space - the manual and real-time acquisition of the geotechnical and structural monitoring data. Standard graphical representations, identification of adverse trends, management of predefined attention and alert thresholds, automatic generation of warnings are just some of the features provided.

This module provides specific tools to support the excavation of the tunnel with conventional method. Through specific algorithms, allows evaluation of 3D convergence in absolute terms and referred to tunnel local axis, as well as providing an estimation of expected convergence.
The module CONVENTIONAL TUNNELLING also allows collecting data about progress of construction phases, their location on the reference map, and the systematic collection of documentation, such as photographs and face mapping, accessible through a specific tool for a rapid assessment of encountered conditions.

The module MECHANIZED TUNNELLING connects in real-time the database with the driving system of the tunnel boring machines.
The tunnel boring machines can be located in real-time on the reference map.
The overall set of excavation parameters can be queried and graphically retrieved by excavated ring, by group of rings or by a time interval.
The display in real time of TBM parameters, allows, if correlated with geological and geotechnical data, a rapid assessment of critical issues related to excavation progress.

This module allows the systematic collection and evaluation of investigations and tests results, carried out before and during construction.
This is an optional module created to managing most of other construction works, including open pit mines, bridges, shafts. In this module are stored function for managing project situation as stability conditions, and links to other documents like works progress reports.
